Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) to Open as Hotel in 2013 |
After having to put their original conversion plans on hold for the QE2, Dubai Ports (DP) World and the ship's current owners, Istithmar World, announced the ship will be turned into a 300-room floating hotel, retaining most of her original fittings and layout.
"The 70,327-ton, 1,791-passenger vessel will remain docked next to the original cruise terminal at Port Rashid. The cruise terminal is being developed into an attraction for arriving/departing cruise passenger featuring a maritime museum.
QE2 served as part of Cunard's fleet from 1969 until its retirement in 2008. In 2007, the QE2 was sold to Istithmar World, (the investment arm of state-run Dubai World) for $100 million. Original plans called for a massive redesign and upgrade of the vessel, into a modern, floating high-end resort. Due to the world ecpnomic issues the grander plans have been put on hold for a more conservative approach.
Current owners state that the ship has a strong following and many prospective patrons would like to experience the ship as she was originally designed.
The QE2 Hotel is expected to be open in about 18 months.
